RARE Vintage 1930's Pre-WWII Sterling Silver Lighter Case With Zippo Insert. When Zippo first began offering sterling and gold lighters, they did not have the ability to manufacture the cases in-house. These cases were made by outside companies, and the earliest known cases (1936-37) were square with integrated hinges, and bore the full Zippo stamp on the bottom with the added sterling mark and TC hallmark, belonging to the Thomae company of Attleboro Mass. The lighter we are offering is identical in construction to those made by the Thomae company, though it does not have any makers marks on it. It is simply marked sterling under the hinge, just as the early 3 barrel sterling Zippo cases were marked. The Thomae made cases also had identical reference numbers on the inside of the lid and case. The insert is a 1937 square case insert which fits perfectly. So, while we can say that it is identical in construction to The other known examples of the earliest sterling silver Zippo cases, unfortunately we can't offer any further connection. Please view all the photos, and if you would like any additional information, let us know.Condition is very good. The hinge is flattened from wear, but is still solid. The lid sits slightly misaligned. No dings or dents. Clearly marked sterling below the hinge. The bottom of the case is unmarked. The inside of the case and lid also have matching reference marks. The insert is a 1936-37 Zippo, unmarked. Hump spring, 14 hole chimney. The insert fits perfectly in the case. 2 1/8" x 1 7/16" x 1/2". 46.1 grams.
