Saint's guide to Vietnam war era lighters
The 1963-1972 counterfeit lighters are really really good and can be hard to spot. Here's some things you want to consider before buying:

    * Use a magnifying glass to look at the bottom stamp. The markings must be straight lines without any curves.
    * Ask the seller where he got his lighter. If in Asia consider the fact that most Americans brought their Zippos back home. Although some Zippos still are dug up in Vietnam, it is not many.
    * Check cam, wheel and hinge. Compare them with a regular Zippo and look for differences in look and color (choice of materials). Lots of counterfeit Zippos tend to use copper material flint wheel rivets (rusty red). This is also the case with the cam rivets. They are either red or too shiny. If still in doubt, check the flint tube too. Is the screw too small?
    * Check military- or Zippo records (manuals) to check if that unit was stationed in the area the lighter was found, or for info on used emblems/engravings.
    * In case of online auctions request a photo of the case and also the insert.
    * Use common sense, you can't buy a real Vietnam war era collectable for $3.


      Also look out for authentic Zippo lighters passed on as old Vietnam war lighters. The lighter might look old, but if you check the dating code it might turn out that Zippo produced it in 1998 or something like that. Doesn't really add up, does it? :-)
